A well system 10 includes a well tool 12 positioned in a wellbore 20. The well tool includes an actuator 34 and an operating member 40 displaceable to operate the well tool 12. The actuator 34 includes at least one a series of longitudinally distributed electromagnets 30, which are operable to displace the well tool 12
