The surface layer of the roll barrel portion includes, by mass, 1.5% to 2.5% C, 1.3% to 3.5% Si, 0.1% to 2.0% Mn, 0.5% to 8.0% Ni, 0.1% to 2.0% Cr, 0.2% to 5.0% Mo, 0.1% to 5.0% V, 0.1% to 5.0% W, 0.1% to 5.0% Nb, and 0.05% to 2.0% Co, the balance consisting of Fe and impurities, and graphite having an area ratio of 0.5% to 5.0%. Therefore, the roll according to the invention has high wear resistance and a good biting characteristic.
